Periodontics in Bedford
Gum disease can have a significant impact on your health. It can cause tooth loss and chronic bad breath, and it has been linked to conditions such as heart disease. It’s very important to keep your gums healthy - this helps prevent conditions such as gum infections that can lead to gum disease. Periodontal treatments help you maintain healthy gums.
Flap Procedures
Sometimes it’s necessary for your dentist to access the roots of your teeth to provide treatment. To do this we make a small incision above the tooth being treated to open a small “flap” in your gums. Once the treatment is finished, we close the flap with sutures and let it heal.
Scaling and Root Planing
Tartar, plaque, and other irregularities on the roots of your teeth can irritate your gums and make them vulnerable to infection. Scaling and root planing are treatments to remove these irritants and keep your gums healthy.
Extractions
Sometimes we need to extract a tooth. We usually recommend an extraction when a tooth can’t be restored or if it puts the other teeth or your gums at risk of infection or damage. We perform extractions under a local anesthetic and optional sedation if needed. After the extraction the lost tooth can be restored with a dental implant or a bridge.
